2007 Grilled Cheese Poetry Month Contest

April is National Grilled Cheese month and The Pop Shop in Collingswood, NJ — with over 30 grilled cheese variations on its menu — is the place to celebrate! And just as there are so many delicious grilled cheeses at The Pop Shop, there are many ways to celebrate National Grilled Cheese Month with us!
Along with being National Grilled Cheese Month, April is also National Poetry Month. The Pop Shop loves both, so we hosted our second annual Pop Shop Cheesy Poetry Contest in April 2007. Poets young and old were invited to test their creativity and enter their works. The entries are below. We think they are all fantastic!

ADULT WINNER
Oh, Pop Shop, you funster,
A creation with muenster?
Is anything better,
Than a sandwich plumb with cheddar?
Thinly sliced swiss and monterey jack,
Nestled in a pretzel sack.
Oh, la la, mysterious brie,
Goat cheese and feta, sing to me.
Colby and ham, say hello,
To the chewy sourdough.
Mozzarella, don't you fret,
Looking pretty on baguette.
Is this heaven? I think so,
Now that I found you, I can't let go.
Served with a cup of creamy slaw,
This has got to be against the law!
Zesty pickle on the side,
Add hot soup or potatoes fried.
The official meal of Collingswood, En-Jay,
Is Pop Shop grilled cheese, any time, any day!

Rebirth, at the Pop Shop
Yes there is in me this tiny child,
wistful and comfortable at play,
looking for a place to stay a wnile,
to relax. lunch and spend the day.
When the brightly shod Pop Shop walls
greet me as if to shout “Hello there!”
I am then drawn to the pastel stalls
and slide in where but a child should dare.
By this time, I have regressed in age,
and the child inside has taken over,
and left that old man in all his sage,
pouring silliness upon his sober.
Sundaes, shakes, dogs and much sweet stuff
set me to think such wondrous things,
while spilled stickies land on shirt and cuff,
and syrupy drinks leave multiple rings.
Who cares about such, when playing eight;
it’s part of the fun of getting there.
To be reborn at the Pop Shop’s great,
and slide in where but a child should dare.

CHILD - Runner Up
The grilled cheese choice
I made a big decision,
a little while ago,
Of where to eat my Pop Shop grilled cheese
Which clearly goes to show.
I was standing there in line,
the man says, “Here or to go?”
but my absent answer made
the line go very, very slow.
“Hey, c’mon!” I heard them say to me,
I come up with a lie,
“My shoe’s untied,
can’t you even see?”
Suddenly, I got an idea, i
t couldn’t fail this time,
I decided to move all the way
to the back of the line.
But alas, the line moved up very quickly,
So soon enough everyone else
was behind me.
So, before I know it, I am back at the very front of the line,
So I say, “Oh, fine!”
I said, “To go,” but I didn’t really mean it!
But as I got in my car, I began to throw a fit!
So I rushed to the Pop Shop cold and exposed,
But they had already changed the sign
from open to closed.
Suddenly, it began to rain,
like in a dramatic film,
and missing my chance,
made me feel, oh so very ill.
Now I lay in bed, trying to go to sleep,
but All I feel like doing is giving a good weep.
Finally, I go to sleep, feeling nightmarish,
Knowing that my grilled cheese has certainly gone to perish.

Delicious American cheese,
Pass the non-cooked bread please,
Cook it at 100 degrees.
Pour pop rocks into the soda pop,
Hope the popping soda doesn’t drop.
Now the meal is served and done,
The pop shop is imaginative and fun.
Colorful melodic restaurant,
Finally a dinner that I really want.
When you bite there’s a crunchy layer, a chewy layer then a crunchy layer.

I love grilled cheese
My family and I
People would say "What do you eat it with, tell me please."

But we have never had
The joy of The Pop Shop's grilled cheese.
When I took my first bite, it wasn't bad!
It was better than any ever made.

The Pop Shop is great.

On my way to the Pop Shop I saw an ugly ice cream monster.

TAKE ME TO THE POP SHOP
The sweet smell of the melted cheese
makes my mouth water.
I can almost feel the toasted bread
crunching in my mouth.
The refreshing taste of the chocolate coke
running down my throat.
I’ll just go in and get a seat on one of the spinning counter stools,
And enjoy the delectable taste going in my mouth.
Oh, the food, the fun, oh man!
Please take me to the Pop Shop!

The Pop Shop contains the golden brown color of toasted bread,
And the oozy goodness of the yellow cheese,
Cut into triangles, centered on a plate.
The refreshingly cool chocolate coke on the side,
A perfectly fine lunch or dinner.
It holds my appetite, I don’t know about anyone else.
So, come to the Pop Shop and check for yourself.
